Volkswagen's ID.2X: Affordable £25k Electric Vehicle to Compete with Renault 4's Style and Road Presence
Volkswagen Unveils New Electric Compact SUV, the ID.Cross
At the Munich Auto Show, Volkswagen (VW) has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the ID.Cross, a small electric SUV that slots in beneath the ID.3 in the company's lineup. This near-production concept is set to hit the road next year, offering a zero-emission answer to popular models like the T-Cross.
The ID.Cross shares a design study with the ID.2X and is a tougher, higher-riding sibling to the ID.2 supermini. Its design features short overhangs, pronounced wheelarches, and a wide stance, giving it a squat, confident look. The front sports an upright nose, adding attitude, while the rear sports a light-up VW badge and three-slat pillar detailing reminiscent of the ID. Buzz.
The ID.Cross will be available with two battery options: a 38kWh pack and a larger 58kWh pack. The latter offers up to 280 miles of range, making it an attractive option for those seeking long-distance capabilities. Rapid charging at 125kW should allow for a 10-80% top-up in under 30 minutes, making it a practical choice for daily commuting and road trips.
Prices for the ID.Cross are expected to start from around £25,000, positioning it between the £20k ID.2 supermini and mainstream family EVs. This is part of Volkswagen's push into affordable EVs, with multiple new models on the horizon.
Alongside the ID.Cross, the ID.2 supermini is also making its debut at Munich. The ID.Every1 city car is expected to launch in 2027, priced under £18,000, further expanding Volkswagen's affordable EV offerings.
In addition to the ID.Cross, Volkswagen, along with Cupra and Skoda, will launch their own takes on the same MEB Entry platform, which the ID.2X, ID.2, and Skoda Epiq also share. This collaboration is expected to drive down costs and increase efficiency, allowing these companies to offer more affordable electric vehicles to consumers.
The ID.Cross is expected to be a crucial car for Volkswagen as it pushes affordable electric models into the mainstream. With its bold styling, practical features, and competitive pricing, the ID.Cross is shaping up to be a strong contender in the compact electric SUV market. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting new vehicle makes its way to dealerships.
